Dublin Movements, September 1978

This month saw continued variety on the airliner front, with Aer Lingus again hiring-in extra capacity to meet some of its commitments.  These included Boeing 727-100s of Pan Am, which had a number of the type based in West Germany to operate Internal German Services (known as the IGS), because flights to and from West Berlin could be operated only by carriers from the Allied Powers (the USA, UK and France).  These 727s also operated connecting flights to London. These were not common visitors to Ireland so it was noteworthy when they appeared in Dublin. The Irish-registered 707 on the 2nd had been Aer Lingus's first of the type but was disposed of in 1972 after the airline's frst 747s had joined the fleet. By 1978 it was owned by lessor Guinness Peat Aviation and was operating with Iran Air, the Islamic revolution in Iran still being some months in the future. Another 707 of note was N425MA on the 24th; my recollection is that this was in connection with work that had begun to return C6-BDG, an ex-Bahamas World Boeing 707-321 that had been stored at Dublin for several years, to airworthiness. The latter would eventually leave, as N433MA, later in the year.

DC-3s were not a common sight at Dublin at this time, but the month saw several of the type visit. Taking up residence was the first example for Clyden Airways, a new Irish operator which had secured a contract to carry mail between Dublin and Manchester. Having arrived on the 15th as G-AMPZ, it gained its Irish registration the next day and flew its first service on the 17th. More exotic was the Conroy DC-3 conversion which visited after appearing at the SBAC show at Farnborough. It had been fitted with three PT-6 turboprops in place of the origina R-1830 radials and was being marketed for maritime patrol duty amongst other roles.  I think it was demonstrated to the Air Corps, but no order resulted.  This airframe survives in a stripped condition with Basler at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, probably as a parts source.

Industrial action by Aer Lingus clerical workers continued and this brought a variety of carriers in to maintain at least a limited schedule. There were of course many charter companies in existence and it was not yet summer, so there was capacity available, I expect. As can be seen, Dan-Air Comets appeared on several occasions and I don’t think the type was seen much more at Dublin, after this flurry of activity. G-BDIU and G-BDIV were former RAF Comet 4Cs and as such were probably a good purchase by Dan-Air, as they had no doubt been well looked-after in their military days. The French Noratlas was visiting on one of their sporadic navigation training flights; 170 was broken up after retirement but its cut-down fuselage pod survived in private hands for many years in Les Regnacs, near Bergerac, in France. 1 April      D-ABEC          B737-130             ...

Not too much of great note this month, though there were a few non-standard visitors, particularly around Christmas time.  The TAROM Il-18s were most likely carrying ships’ crews. Dublin Movements, August 1978

The summer months continued to see some interesting general aviation visitors, including a Spanish Cessna 172 and a French Super Cub - the flight to Ireland must have been quite a journey for them and their crews.   The Polish Mi-2 helicopter is the only example ever to have visited Ireland and a contemporary report in "Flight" magazine said that it was in the UK and Ireland as part of a farming machinery sales campaign. In Britain it was used to carry spares to farmers across East Anglia.   Whether this stimulated sales of Ursus Bizon equipment is not known! The Mi-2 was built solely in Poland, by PZL-Swidnik, with 5,497 examples made.   SP-SWG survives in a museum in Germany, albeit wearing false Aeroflot markings. Airliners of note included the El Al 707 - a real rarity for Dublin - and Evergreen International DC-8, which I think was operating for Aer Lingus. Also, the Tarom Tu-154s which I recorded on the 6th and the 20th represented relatively rare appearances here...
