Dublin Movements, February 1979

This quiet winter month saw just a few visitors of interest. Highlights were the two French Navy C-47s, these being intermittent visitors until their retirement in the mid-1980s. The Montana Austria Boeing 707 on the 26th was an addition to the company's fleet, which hitherto had consisted of two 707-138Bs. An ex-Wardair aicraft, it would have an interesting future career.  It  was seized by the US Justice Department after a drug smuggling incident in May 1981 and later became a USAF C-137C, serial 85-6973. It was later heaviliy modified as a JSTARS aircraft and reserialled 00-2000. It flew with the 128th ACCS Georgia ANG at Robins AFB from 2003 to September 2019. It has been preserved at the Museum of Aviation at Warner Robins since July 2023. A most unusual arrival on the 28th was a B-25 wearing WW2 USAAF colours, following use in the making of the movie "Hanover Street".  It would be parked at Dublin for over two years, effectively abandoned by its owners. It too has survived and is now exhibited in the March Field Museum in California.

The summer months continued to see some interesting general aviation visitors, including a Spanish Cessna 172 and a French Super Cub - the flight to Ireland must have been quite a journey for them and their crews.   The Polish Mi-2 helicopter is the only example ever to have visited Ireland and a contemporary report in "Flight" magazine said that it was in the UK and Ireland as part of a farming machinery sales campaign. In Britain it was used to carry spares to farmers across East Anglia.   Whether this stimulated sales of Ursus Bizon equipment is not known! The Mi-2 was built solely in Poland, by PZL-Swidnik, with 5,497 examples made.   SP-SWG survives in a museum in Germany, albeit wearing false Aeroflot markings. Airliners of note included the El Al 707 - a real rarity for Dublin - and Evergreen International DC-8, which I think was operating for Aer Lingus. Also, the Tarom Tu-154s which I recorded on the 6th and the 20th represented relatively rare appearances here...

This month saw continued variety on the airliner front, with Aer Lingus again hiring-in extra capacity to meet some of its commitments.  These included Boeing 727-100s of Pan Am, which had a number of the type based in West Germany to operate Internal German Services (known as the IGS), because flights to and from West Berlin could be operated only by carriers from the Allied Powers (the USA, UK and France).  These 727s also operated connecting flights to London. These were not common visitors to Ireland so it was noteworthy when they appeared in Dublin. The Irish-registered 707 on the 2nd had been Aer Lingus's first of the type but was disposed of in 1972 after the airline's frst 747s had joined the fleet. By 1978 it was owned by lessor Guinness Peat Aviation and was operating with Iran Air, the Islamic revolution in Iran still being some months in the future. Dublin Movements, January 1979

This mid-winter month was brightened up by the sizeable amount of traffic generated by the Ireland-France rugby international.  As the only scheduled flights between Ireland and France at the time were Aer Lingus's Paris services, the great majority of French fans travelled by charter flights, large and small.  The Caravelle was still quite prominent, but the type would become less common within a few years, especially as noise and economic factors led to the retirement of the earlier RR Avon-powered variants.  As can be seen, smaller types such as Navajos were also seen, presumably coming from regional parts of France.     Towards the end of the month, two of the veteran C-47s of the French Navy visited on a training mission and my recollection is that I saw these parked on the ramp after dark, looking well under the floodlights.
