Dublin Movements, November 1977  A few charters and Aer Lingus hire-ins provided some colour during this otherwise quiet part of the year. The Air Inter Caravelle 12 was a particularly rare sight, as these aircraft spent most of their lives flying French domestic services.  The TIA DC-8 brought in members of the "Friendship Force", the most prominent member of the group being Ms Lillian Carter, mother of the then US President. The Britannia 737s that visited some days later took the group to Scotland and back again to Dublin, as far as I can recall. 1 November C-FNOR           Gulfstream II G-ASLE             PA-30 Twin Comanche G-BBCC           PA-23-250 N27330              PA-31-350  PH-GPL             PA-31-310C   194                  ...

Dublin Movements, October 1977  A few items are worthy of comment.  The Okanagan Sikorsky S-58 was a very rare visitor and this is the only visit of the type that I can recall (though US Army examples visited in the early 1960s, I think). It was in Ireland in support of oil/gas exploration activity.  The Transmeridian CL-44 at the end of the month was quite a rarity, though the type had visited infrequently with Tradewinds in previous years.  This was the only TMAC example registered in Hong Kong and it reverted to UK marks G-AWWB in 1979. The Balkan Tu-134 on the 13th was the original short-fuselage variant and the type was not a regular sight in Dublin at that time.   1 October D-ABEM          B737-130                    Lufthansa                     LH077 EI-AOS           Cessna ...

Dublin Movements, September 1977  A month with reduced activity and variety after the summer peak. A return to studies for me also meant that I was not able to monitor activity during much of the week. the Aviogenex Tu-134A was a rare vistor, for a sports fixture, I think. Aero 145 G-ATBH was in itself a rare type; this example was a regular visitor, being flown by owner Stefan Brod. He had been born in 1923 and was a Czech Jew who escaped the Nazis in Europe. He fought for the Allies in WW2 as a RAF Depot Signals Officer in the Free Czech Air Force.  He was a successful scientist and businessman and only entered semi-retirement in 2011, before passing away in January 2014. 1 September EI-AWN                BN-2A                          Aer Arann G-AZRB              Cessna 340 G-AXXH       ...

Dublin Movements, August 1977 My records for this month are somewhat limited, owing to vacation periods spent elsewhere. The most notable visitor was the Iranian C-130 on the last day of the month - this of course being when the Shah still ruled that country.  The Rolls-Royce-operated Heron is now preserved at the De Havilland Museum in London Colney. 7 August LX-LGW                B707-344                               Luxair   8 August  F-BTOV                V952                                         EAS G-BCXF                HS125 N774TW                B707      ...

Dublin Movements, July 1977 This was a typical summer month, with a range of seasonal charters and also a variety of light aircraft visiting from Europe.  The Caravelle was a popular type, as can be seen in my listing.   I have included two US Navy Kaman Seasprite helicopters seen on board two vessels in Dublin Port.  The port was accessible then in a way that nowadays it is not.  The Mildenhall-based Convair visited Dublin no doubt on a related personnel or mail support flight.  Aer Lingus hired in some additional capacity from the ever-reliable Montana Austria and also the relatively new Icelandic carrier Eagle Air. 1 July D-IABC                 Cessna Citation EC-CIZ                SE210                                       ...
