Dublin Movements, June 1978

The first part of the month  was dominated by the USAF airlift of equipment to Lebanon, with several C-5A Galaxies, C-130s and a C-141 visiting. This was by far the most intensive USAF activity that I had witnessed at Dublin up to that time, though of course presidential visits in later decades generated high volumes of activity also.  The Starlifter, 66-0161, would visit again in 1984, having been stretched in the meantime to C-141B standard.  

The SF Air DC-6 was a rare sight and in fact I did not see it, but have included it for completeness. The Eagle Air 720 on the 12th was in basic Kenya Airways colours after a lease, and used its registration as callsign.  The unusual general aviation visitors on the 3rd and 4th were on their way to an air display at Powerscourt in Co. Wicklow.  The Yak-11 was, and remains, the only example of this type ever to visit Dublin. Early HS125 G-ASSM (14th) is now preserved in the Science Museum, South Kensington, in London.  

Later in the month, seasonal charter flights carrying students to and from Ireland were in evidence, notably seeing several Europe Aero Service Vanguards appearing, these being the last passenger examples to operate in Europe. Also noteworthy on the charter front is the number of Pan Am Boeing 707s to visit.  As the Boeing 747 displaced the 707 from Pan Am's major routes, the airline still had a lot of 707s and these seemed to find good employment on charter duties, especially during the summer.  I noted thirteen different Pan Am 707s at Dublin during the month, with some appearing more than once.

Industrial action by Aer Lingus clerical workers continued and this brought a variety of carriers in to maintain at least a limited schedule. There were of course many charter companies in existence and it was not yet summer, so there was capacity available, I expect. As can be seen, Dan-Air Comets appeared on several occasions and I don’t think the type was seen much more at Dublin, after this flurry of activity. G-BDIU and G-BDIV were former RAF Comet 4Cs and as such were probably a good purchase by Dan-Air, as they had no doubt been well looked-after in their military days. The French Noratlas was visiting on one of their sporadic navigation training flights; 170 was broken up after retirement but its cut-down fuselage pod survived in private hands for many years in Les Regnacs, near Bergerac, in France. 1 April      D-ABEC          B737-130             ...

Not too much of great note this month, though there were a few non-standard visitors, particularly around Christmas time.  The TAROM Il-18s were most likely carrying ships’ crews.
